University of KwaZulu-Natal UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATAL
DESCRIPTION 
The University of KwaZulu-Natal is one of the leading educational institutions in South Africa, and is widely recognised as an academic centre of excellence in Africa. Its mission is to be the "premier University of African scholarship." It is a popular destination for international students wishing to be at the heart of cutting edge change where high-tech solutions, based on in-depth research, are being developed in response to some of the world's most pressing problems and challenges such as the HIV/AIDS virus, water, food security, etc. The International Student Offices on all five campuses have experienced staff who provide ongoing assistance to international students at UKZN. Students are introduced to campus and receive support upon arrival with a week-long orientation and continue to receive on-site support and assistance for the duration of their stay. 
 

ACADEMICS
Semester Dates:
  • Fall: Late July-Early Sep.
  • Spring: Feb-July
  • Orientation is held one week before the start of the semester
Host University Courses:  Note:
  • Students are able to take courses on separate campuses, however, travel time between campuses can be as much as 15-20 minutes
  • Credits earned through a Drake exchange program will count as transfer credits
  • Course Pre-Approval Forms are required as part of the program application
  • Participants are required to maintain full-time status while abroad
  • Note: Exchange Partner semester dates may conflict with the Drake University academic calendar

FINANCES
  • Students pay regular Drake tuition, meal plan, and housing to their Drake Account for semester and year-long programs
  • Financial Aid and Scholarships generally apply as they would if the student were studying on campus
  • All additional fees (books, international health insurance, optional excursions, airfare, etc.) will be paid separately
  • Students should meet with the Office of Student Financial Planning once a program is chosen to discuss their award amounts 

APPLYING TO A DRAKE INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM
Drake students participating on this program are required to complete the following steps:
  1. Drake Exchange Application
    • Attend an Education Abroad 101 Session
    • Click on the Apply Now button at the top of this page
    • Schedule a meeting with an Education Abroad Advisor BEFORE the application deadline
  2. Drake Exchange Nomination
    • Receive notification of status within two weeks after the application deadline
  3. Host University Application 
    • Schedule a meeting with an Education Abroad Advisor to complete the host university application AFTER nomination
  4. Host University Acceptance
    • Upload a copy of host university acceptance letter to application
