The University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) is a public university located about an hour north of Brisbane, the capital of the state of Queensland, Australia. USC opened its doors to students for the first time in 1996. Being a relatively young campus, USC's on-campus student population at the moment runs around 8,000. The smaller student population assures a more personal experience with outstanding student support. Since its establishment, the University has focused on community engagement, campus development, innovative programs and a personalized approach to learning.
Lifestyle
The University is located on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Beautiful beaches and stunning hinterland are in close proximity and the climate is warm, year-round. Students get the best of both worlds--a high quality educational experience while enjoying the lifestyle benefits of a coastal region. The University is also just 90km north of Brisbane, Queensland's capital city.
Living on the Coast
The University of the Sunshine Coast is the newest greenfield campus in Australia. The campus is situated next to the Mooloolah River National Park and enjoys the company of a variety of Australian wildlife including Eastern Grey kangaroos.
Environment
The environment has been a primary consideration throughout the University's development. The University's location adjacent to the ecologically sensitive Mooloolah River National Park has placed importance on managed development of the site, including the need for structural, landscaping and waste management strategies to minimize impact on the National Park.
The National Park is a sensitive estuarine area of wallum heath and eucalypt woodlands. The University's proximity to the National Park, combined with the open spaces on campus (all of which are covered by protected status) has seen an increasing population of eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) finding sanctuary on site. Around 50 of the kangaroos are now estimated to travel between the campus and the National Park. Plovers, wood ducks, Australian miner birds and butcherbirds also live in harmony with the University community.
To aid in the protection of this important and unique habitat, the University has implemented a number of environmentally sustainable initiatives.
The University has an Environmental Advisory Committee that meets four times a year and reports to the Vice-Chancellor. The Committee's role is to advise on strategies or initiatives that impact on the campus environment and surrounds.
Academic Integrity
USC is the only public University in Australia to gain 5 stars for teaching quality in the 2011 Good Universities Guide. The University wins more than its share of citations from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council and receives national and international acclaim through the work of its three research centres in sustainability, genecology (studying the genes of plants and animals) and sport and exercise science. Courses
The University comprises three faculties: Arts & Social Sciences; Business; and Science, Health & Education. USC offers more than 100 undergraduate and postgraduate study programs in business and information technology; communication and design; education; health; humanities and social sciences; and science and engineering. On-line course registration with Australian students

Accommodation
Resort-style student accommodation is located adjacent to campus in two apartment complexes. With each, students share an apartment with three other students. Australian students are housed with internationals. Each student has a private bedroom, bathroom and telephone. The kitchen and common living areas are shared. Australian students are also housed in these apartment complexes. Check out the Web sites of each complex for details and photos: Varsity Apartments and UniCentral

Four Day On-Campus Orientation
USC offers a comprehensive four day on-campus orientation upon the students' arrival. Off-campus orientations may be fun but they do little to introduce students to the university and its staff/services, nor does an off-campus orientation allow students an opportunity to get to know the region surrounding the campus prior to the start of classes. USC's arrival orientation is partly social, partly academic, partly practical.
A number of student trips are available at USC; they can be booked online, by phone or in person. STA representatives are on campus two days a week to help students plan trips. A myriad of activities, both on and off campus are available as well. Please be sure to check out this link to view trips being offered, USC Sport, and scheduled activities.
