AOI: Historical Foundations

Millions of people, Jews and non-Jews, perished during the Holocaust. To the extent we can better know the details of this era, we can develop a sense of honor for the past and a vision for an honorable future.
This three-credit immersive course is designed to bring history, religion, ethics and culture into focus within the context of the Holocaust. Students will spend more than two weeks in Germany and Poland, visiting remains of Nazi concentration camps, speaking with persons who carry on family and community narratives of the Holocaust, and visiting cultural, historical and contemporary sites.

Physical demands: There will be several hours of walking and standing daily. Since we are visiting historical sites, there will be no elevator or escalator alternative to stairs, in many locations. Walking is outdoors at the former Nazi camps, and is indoor at several museums; requiring indoor walking and standing. We are traveling by bus between cities, and therefore each student will need to carry their own luggage.

Program cost for Summer 2020: $5,600. Included in program cost: airfare from Chicago, housing, program activities, and some meals. Additional expenses may include luggage, meals, etc.
